National Police officers freed a person who had been deprived of liberty and captured a 28-year-old man in the Quitumbe sector, south of Quito, during an operation against an organisation dedicated to car theft, kidnappings and extortion.

Specialist units carried out an intervention on 9 June 2026 in Quitumbe, in the southern area of the Ecuadorian capital, which resulted in the release of a motorist deprived of liberty and the arrest of a 28-year-old subject, identified as Jimmy M. The police action, dubbed "Atlas-086-ZI-DMQ", was conducted in the Metropolitan District of Quito.
According to the investigations, the illicit group used unregulated transport services, coordinated through digital applications, to track future victims. The offenders took advantage of the access gained through these means to locate individuals and then commit crimes at various points throughout the city.
As part of the operation, officers seized a pistol and returned to its owner a vehicle that appeared in records as stolen. They also found and placed in safekeeping someone who had reportedly suffered attacks from this organisation.
The investigations indicate that those involved stole automobiles, kidnapped people and demanded money under threat, resorting to coercion and firearms. Once captured, Jimmy M. was handed over to the judicial authorities for the relevant legal proceedings to be carried out.
The uniformed force clarified that investigations are continuing to determine whether there are links to other crimes that have occurred in the city. At the same time, they are seeking to locate other possible accomplices and assess the scope of operations of this network within the Metropolitan District of Quito.
Police command made a call to the public to prefer legally authorised means of transport and to report unusual conduct to law enforcement.
