Arrest of suspected serial rapist in northern Guayaquil following four months of investigation
The National Police arrested on Thursday 4 June a man identified as a suspected serial rapist in Guayaquil, according to eldiario.ec. The suspect has accumulated at least ten complaints for rape, sexual abuse, drugging and theft from his victims.
The operation was executed by agents from the National Investigation Unit against Sexual and Reproductive Integrity, following four months of investigative work. The arrest took place in the morning hours at an interchange located in the northern part of the city, where the individual was intercepted whilst travelling in a vehicle being driven by his brother.
District General Walter Villarroel Trujillo, commander of Zone 8, outlined the suspect's modus operandi: he selected his victims in areas of heavy transit such as the Bahía sector and the Malecón. He would approach them with job offers or invitations to build trust and, once he persuaded them to go out, he would administer substances to subdue them.
Subsequently, he would take them to hostels, hotels or motels in different areas of Guayaquil, where he committed the sexual abuses. Before abandoning them at different points around the city, he would steal their documents and personal belongings.
During the operation, the brother of the main suspect attempted to interfere with police work and tried to snatch the service weapon from one of the agents. Following this incident, the driver was also apprehended and will be prosecuted for the offences of assault and resistance to authority.
The authorities confirmed that the arrested suspect will face criminal proceedings for the multiple complaints filed against him. The investigation will remain open to establish his responsibility in all cases and to verify whether there are further victims who have not filed formal complaints. The vehicle used and evidence collected during the procedure will serve as evidence in the judicial process.
The identity of the arrested person was not revealed by the authorities until his presentation before the competent court is completed.
