Remand imprisonment for 43 arrested at celebration linked to criminal gang in Guayaquil
In the early hours of Saturday, 27 June, security personnel raided a house in the Ciudad de Dios cooperative, located in the Nueva Prosperina district of north-west Guayaquil, where a social gathering was taking place. As a result, 43 attendees were taken into police custody.
The raid was part of an operation by the Security Bloc, which had indications that members of a criminal organisation were meeting at that property. As officers approached, they came under gunfire, which forced them to respond with lawful use of force.
Once inside the premises, uniformed officers found those arrested in the middle of a party with multi-coloured balloon decorations. According to a report published by the outlet extra.ec, the gathering was intended to pay tribute to alias Cheo, considered one of the leaders of the group known as Los Águilas. However, this individual did not appear at the location and fled.
During the search, two rifles, one automatic-firing pistol, a rifle, five magazines, 62 rounds of ammunition, seven motor vehicles, 30 motorcycles, 13 mobile devices and one computer were seized. The Prosecutor's Office brought charges for illicit association and clandestine arms trafficking.
The judge hearing the case accepted the Public Ministry's request and ordered remand imprisonment for the 43 defendants, who will remain in custody during the course of the investigation.
