An armed attack at the exterior of José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport caused the death of at least one person and left multiple injured. Two minors were apprehended by the National Police.

On the afternoon of Wednesday 17 June 2026, an act of armed violence shook the surroundings of José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport, located in the northern sector of Guayaquil. The incident occurred during hours of high passenger traffic.
The first reports circulated around 18:00, when users of digital platforms began sharing recordings that showed individuals lying on the pavement, in front of one of the entrances designated for passengers at the terminal.
In the images, people with injuries could be seen whilst others took shelter inside the air infrastructure seeking protection. The presence of uniformed National Police officers at the scene was also apparent.
According to the first lines of investigation, the attack would have been carried out using contract killing methods. Police officers managed to intercept the alleged perpetrators when they attempted to flee through one of the car parks adjacent to the terminal.
The Interior Ministry official, John Reimberg, communicated through his social media that two minors were detained in the framework of the operation. However, he provided no additional information about their identities or circumstances.
To date, the authorities have not disclosed the motive behind the attack nor have they updated the clinical condition of the other people affected by the gunfire.
The incident generated moments of anxiety amongst those who were in the facilities, including passengers, family members waiting for flight arrivals, and terminal workers. Guayaquil airport constitutes one of the points with the highest passenger flow in Ecuadorian territory.
