A group of hired assassins carried out an armed attack at the José Joaquín de Olmedo airport in Guayaquil, succeeding in killing the top leader of the criminal gang Los Águilas. The attackers used a bouquet of flowers and a stuffed toy to conceal their firearms and approach their target without raising suspicion.
Images captured by the airport terminal's security cameras show how the attackers, taking advantage of their disguise as supposed visitors, approached the victim and opened fire. The incident occurred in the morning hours of 18 June 2026.
Following the violent action, law enforcement detained several individuals, including two minors, who allegedly participated in the execution of the crime. The authorities are investigating how the hired killers managed to enter the premises whilst carrying weapons.
The criminal organisation Los Águilas operates from the canton of El Triunfo, in the province of Guayas, and has been linked to various acts of violence in the region. The deceased was considered one of the main heads of this armed group.
The airport terminal resumed operations despite the incident, although the event raised questions about security protocols and access controls at the airport.
