A man identified as Elkin Miller S. D. faces a homicide trial after being captured in connection with the massacre that occurred on Sunday in the El Cisne 2 neighbourhood, in south-western Guayaquil. The shooting left six people dead and fifteen injured, including three young children.
The gunfire broke out during a sports celebration for the city's Independence celebrations at the intersection of 22nd Street and Cristóbal Colón. Witnesses and authorities stated that several individuals got out of two vehicles and opened fire on attendees at the event. The attackers were carrying long and short firearms and managed to flee after carrying out the attack.
It was possible to track one of the vehicles used through the CCTV system of SEGURA EP, the municipal security company. The images led uniformed officers to a residence located on 27th Street and C Street, where they arrested the owner of the property. He was then taken to the South Valdivia Judicial Unit for interrogation.
Experts who attended the crime scene collected dozens of shell casings: 47 corresponded to nine-millimetre ammunition and eight to 2.23 calibre projectiles. Two victims lost their lives at the site of the attack itself, while the remaining victims died in hospitals in the area, where most of the injured were also taken.
At the initial hearing, the Public Ministry provided various pieces of evidence: the police report, testimonies from those who made the arrest, a mobile phone, the vehicle linked to the incident and audiovisual material recorded on two discs. The Criminal Guarantees judge acceded to the prosecution's request and ordered preventive detention for the accused, who was transferred to the Penitentiary of the Coast.
The incident reflects the serious security crisis affecting the city. In the first half of 2025, the country accumulated 4,619 violent deaths, a record figure for six months. Despite the internal armed conflict declared by President Daniel Noboa since January 2024 and successive exceptional measures, violence has not subsided. Almost four out of every ten national homicides were committed in Guayaquil and surrounding areas, with Mucho Lote 2 among the hardest hit sectors.
