Arrest for violent robbery in Madrid
A Moroccan teenager aged 18 was arrested on Monday by the National Police following a violent robbery in the Batán area of the Casa de Campo, according to elmundo.es. The suspect used an iron bar to strike his victim, a 26-year-old man, after snatching a gold chain from him by pulling force.
The attacker also stole the victim's mobile phone, who suffered injuries to the neck, head and hands. The assaulted young man was treated by emergency services at the scene of the incident. The victim's cries alerted nearby passers-by, who immediately notified the National Police.
Officers began patrolling the area and, using the description provided by the injured man, located and arrested the suspect shortly afterwards. According to initial investigations, the detainee had turned 18 a month ago and has a number of police records. He had previously resided in the initial reception centre for minors in Batán and at the time of his arrest was sleeping in tents within the Casa de Campo.
Context of insecurity in the park
The assault occurred in broad daylight in an area that has experienced an increase in criminal incidents. Workers at restaurants located in the Casa de Campo have reported an increase in vehicle break-ins in the car park. One waiter commented that he no longer drives his car to the location due to two previous window breakages.
These incidents have been linked by workers to the centre for unaccompanied foreign minors in Batán, managed by the Community of Madrid. The facility, opened in spring 2019 in the former Richard Schirrmann hostel, was created to house unaccompanied foreign minors following the overcrowding of the Hortaleza centre.
The closure and relocation of the facility to Barajas were announced for November 2022, but the then adviser for Social Policies, Concepción Dancausa, cancelled the move a month earlier. The regional government attributed this decision to migration pressure and the need to maintain available reception places.
