Detained following reckless pursuit in Castellón

A 42-year-old man was detained on Monday by Castellón Local Police following a pursuit through several streets in the city, according to elperiodicomediterraneo.com. The driver performed dangerous manoeuvres, drove in the wrong direction and ultimately lost control of the vehicle, colliding with the façade of a shop.

The events began around 07:25 hours when a patrol observed a saloon car travelling at an excessive speed on Gran Vía Tárrega Monteblanco avenue. Upon verifying that it lacked compulsory third-party liability insurance, officers attempted to intervene. The driver, upon noticing the police presence, fled at high speed.

During the pursuit, the vehicle drove onto pavements, failed to observe priority signals and travelled in the wrong direction along Juan Ramón Jiménez and Río Palancia streets, putting pedestrians and other drivers at serious risk. The flight ended at the intersection of Río Turia and Juan Ramón Jiménez, where the saloon car lost control and collided with a commercial establishment. The impact caused significant mechanical damage to the vehicle.

Following the crash, the driver abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot, disobeying the officers' orders. The individual offered strong active resistance during his detention, delivering several kicks to the police officers who were restraining him. Officers employed the requisite police force to achieve his immobilisation. As a result of the struggle, two Local Police officers sustained minor injuries.

Alcohol and drug tests carried out on the driver yielded a result of 0.85 milligrams of alcohol per litre of exhaled air and a positive result for cannabis. The checks also revealed that the detainee had a current driving ban for motor vehicles.

Three other people were travelling in the interior of the saloon car who, according to Local Police, had agreed for the driver to transport them to their homes after leaving a night-time leisure establishment. Upon noticing the police presence, the occupants ordered the driver to stop the vehicle so they could get out.

The detainee, identified as I.P.S., was arrested on suspicion of involvement in offences of disobedience, resistance and assault against authority officials. Proceedings were also initiated on suspicion of offences against road safety. The detainee was taken to the Provincial Commissariat of the National Police for the continuation of the corresponding proceedings.
