Intoxicated driver flees police in Kontiolahti – speed reaches 200 km/h

According to Ilta-Sanomat, police received two reports of a car travelling at excessive speed on Kajaanitie towards Joensuu. A vehicle matching the description was spotted near Kontiolahti church village, at which point the patrol turned to follow it.

The driver overtook other vehicles at Uuro on the overtaking lane. The speed measured was 144 km/h in an area with an 80 km/h speed limit. The patrol switched on its siren and flashing lights.

Following this, the car accelerated further. Before the Lehmo interchange, both the fleeing car and the police car were travelling at 200 km/h in the same 80 km/h speed-limited area. At the interchange, the driver moved into the lane reserved for buses, lost control of the vehicle on a left-hand bend and collided with a barrier on Kajaanitie.

Police reported that the driver was a woman in her early twenties. She recorded a breath-alcohol reading of 0.63 mg/l. There was also a passenger in the front passenger seat. Both were taken to the Joensuu joint emergency department for examination.

Police are investigating the matter as reckless endangerment of road safety and aggravated drink-driving. The driver was banned from driving and her driving licence was taken into police custody.
