Pupil opens fire at Aubagne middle school, two staff injured

A headmaster and a teacher were shot and wounded at the Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, near Marseille, on Monday morning, France 24 reports. French Education Minister Édouard Geffray confirmed the incident, stating that a pupil at the school was suspected of being behind the attack.

French authorities arrested a 14-year-old boy in connection with the shooting, which was reportedly carried out with a hunting rifle, according to a police source. The suspected perpetrator fired several shots inside the school before staff managed to subdue him and law enforcement intervened, France 3 television reported.

A third person was grazed during the attack. Police confirmed that the lives of the headmaster and teacher were not in danger.

The Marseille prosecutor's office confirmed an arrest but did not provide further details. The prime minister's office said the interior and education ministers were travelling to the scene.

Police told AFP there did not appear to be any link between the shooting and the student protests that have swept across France in recent weeks. "The middle school was not affected by the high school students' protest," police said.
