Racist attack in the Yvelines: one dead and five wounded
An individual opened fire from a car on Friday in the Yvelines, killing one person and wounding five others. Investigators believe that the gunman was seeking to target people of immigrant background, according to France Info.
Having travelled to Trappes in the evening, Emmanuel Macron condemned an act marking a "turning point" for the Republic. According to him, this is the first terrorist attack conceived to assassinate French citizens because of their skin colour or religion. He urged his fellow citizens to "yield nothing" in the face of racist doctrines.
These statements sparked criticism on social media, with some accusing the head of state of obscuring the antisemitic attacks of 2012 perpetrated by Mohammed Merah. The Élysée then clarified that the President was referring to the first terrorist crime based on skin colour committed in France, while maintaining that attacks against the Jewish community had not been forgotten.
For his part, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the event as a "terrorist crime".
