Pupil brought before justice for attempted murder
According to BFM TV, a 20-year-old pupil suspected of stabbing one of his schoolmates several times on Thursday in La Courneuve (Seine-Saint-Denis) has been brought before an examining judge for attempted voluntary homicide. The prosecutor in Bobigny indicated on Saturday that the suspect was handed over to the public prosecutor's office after 48 hours in police custody.
The victim, aged 16, was wounded in the chest and was able to leave the emergency department the same day after two stitches were applied. Total work incapacity was set at 5 days.
A judicial investigation has been opened for attempted voluntary homicide against the wounded victim as well as two other minors present, and for carrying a Category D weapon. The public prosecutor's office has requested placement in provisional detention.
The suspect admitted to the acts but contested any intention to kill. According to witness accounts, he allegedly attempted to strike other people without succeeding. The incident occurred during a blockade of Denis Papin vocational school.
The prosecutor indicated that the person responsible for the stab wounds gave contradictory explanations for their origin, notably mentioning a feeling of threat. He also repeatedly referred to his mental health problems. A possible impairment of discernment due to bipolar disorder was noted.
A search of his parents' home revealed consumption of illegal drugs and medicines, but provided no information on the perpetrator's motives.
