Chief referee Ilias Koromelas denies nine bribery charges in Greek basketball. He claims that the €102,000 found at his home comes from legitimate compensation.

Koromelas: "The money comes from legitimate compensation"
Chief referee Ilias Koromelas' defence proceedings are currently underway before the court, as reported by Newsit.gr. The defendant faces nine acts of bribery of referees and figures in Greek basketball, aimed at benefiting Promitheas Patras and other teams.
Koromelas categorically denies all charges in the indictment, arguing that throughout his career he acted exclusively within the scope of his professional duties.
The explanation for the €102,000
During a house search, police discovered €102,000 at the defendant's home. He argues that these amounts constitute part of a total compensation of €263,000 that he received from his international refereeing activities — specifically a deposit of €193,000 and a further €70,000 for not having committed any violations. For all the amounts, he claims he has the necessary supporting documentation.
According to the defendant, the money had been transferred via bank and was subsequently withdrawn in cash due to personal matters concerning a close family member. Prior to the start of his defence, his accountant testified as a defence witness.
The Ukrainian referee's accusation
Regarding the allegation by a Ukrainian referee, according to which Koromelas offered him €10,000 to whistle in favour of Unics Kazan in the Eurocup final in 2021, the defendant stated that the matter has already been brought to the attention of the Greek authorities and has been filed away.
Two further defences to follow
Following Koromelas, Vasso Tsaroucha is expected to present her defence, facing 13 acts of bribery, as well as Tassos Piloidis, who is alleged to have received payment on two occasions in order to direct matches accordingly.
