50 arrests and over 200 outlets under investigation for tax evasion at "Horiatiko" chain
Fifty arrests, estimated tax losses exceeding €100 million, and more than 200 outlets under examination—these are the dimensions of the major police operation concerning the "Horiatiko" bakery chain, according to Dikastiko.gr.
The arrests include the chain's owner. The case is being handled by the Organised Crime Directorate, which is investigating an extensive tax fraud scheme.
Charges: from VAT to social security contributions
According to information disclosed thus far, the authorities are examining reported fraudulent acts against the state, tax evasion, non-remittance of VAT, and failure to pay social security contributions.
The investigation does not end at the chain's bakeries. It is reported to extend to a wider network of companies operating through third parties.
Fictitious managers under scrutiny
The authorities place particular emphasis on the role of individuals who appeared as representatives or managers of businesses without—according to the evidence being investigated—being the actual beneficiaries of the business activity.
The "Horiatiko" chain operates in various regions of Greece, both through owned outlets and through franchise agreements.
Possible connections and human trafficking
The spotlight of regulatory and police authorities is also being directed at possible links to other businesses and activities. Among the issues that have been raised are complaints about possible cases of human trafficking, which, however, require further investigation.
At the same time, the possibility is being examined that similar tax evasion and contribution evasion practices may have been applied at other companies, a fact that could further broaden the scope of the case.
The operation is ongoing
The number of arrests and those involved may increase as the investigation progresses. Upon completion of investigative actions, the Greek Police is expected to make official announcements regarding the findings, the full extent of the case, and the charges to be brought against those arrested.
