Attack on students in Zarouhleika: six in hospital, perpetrators with guns and uniforms
Six students ended up in hospital following an organised attack by a fascist group in Zarouhleika in Patras, according to Efimeríða ton Syntaktón. Patras Mayor Kóstas Peletídis spoke about the incident on radio station Athína 9.84 and characterised it as "clearly a terrorist act".
"Six children ended up in hospital, and after police mobilisation the perpetrators were found and in their possession they had guns, uniforms, knuckledusters," Peletídis said. "It was clearly a terrorist attempt and an action with the spirit and views that this fascist space holds with its criminal stance."
According to the mayor, the initial target of the attack was a minor student, a member of the fifteen-person [student body] and the Coordinating Committee of the schools. When classmates and students rushed to help her, the group of perpetrators turned against them with knuckledusters.
Peletídis also alleged the stance taken by the police, which — he claimed — proceeded with arrests that included the victims themselves. "Those who gave orders to the police to present this as a clash between groups need to understand that we are not twiddling our thumbs," he emphasised characteristically.
The mayor stressed that behind fascist spaces there exists a broader system that supports them. "There is an entire system that wants this space to exist. Those who hold economic power also have reserves in case their power is threatened," he said, adding that "it is shameful for a society to have fascistic elements calling the shots."
Addressing the incident, Peletídis sent a clear message about the stance of the municipal authority: "We will not allow fascists to come out and play a leading role in a city that is fighting for democratic progress."
