Tax evasion over €100 million: The criminal history of "Horiatiko" owner

"Horiatiko" tax evasion network: Over €100 million and dozens of arrests

Greek Police are investigating a tax evasion case of dimensions far exceeding that of Pizza Fan, according to In.gr. Initial estimates put the evaded revenues at over €100 million. Angelos Giannakopulos, owner of the "Horiatiko" bakery chain with dozens of stores in Attica, has already been arrested for tax fraud involving millions.

Vasilis Lampropoulos, police correspondent for "Vima", "Nea" and In.gr, revealed in the "Developments Now" broadcast that this case was merely "the tip of the iceberg". Authorities had been monitoring the specific network for months, gathering critical evidence.

The network operated an organised plan: it placed fictitious representatives in leadership positions in businesses, who would then disappear leaving behind massive debts to the state. Tax obligations were transferred to shell companies, with the result that taxes were never collected.

The investigation extends to e-EFKA, as extensive fraud is being examined regarding the systematic non-payment of social security contributions. Simultaneously, authorities are investigating the operation of specialised websites used for the promotion of women, with individuals in key roles in the network — including women — coming under scrutiny.

According to Lampropoulos, arrests may exceed 40, while the number of accused is estimated to reach 100 or more. The case involves business owners, accountants and other individuals being examined to determine if they participated in the operation of the mechanism. The Greek FBI is coordinating the investigation.

Criminal history with serious charges

This is not the first time the name Giannakopulos has occupied the judiciary's attention. In 2008 he was arrested as the alleged head of an international human trafficking network. In 2015 he was sentenced at first instance to ten years and six months imprisonment.

According to the referral order at the time, the network was allegedly channelling proceeds from its illegal activity into investments in the "Horiatiko" chain. In 2018, however, the businessman was acquitted in a separate case file concerning related charges for trafficking and money laundering.

In November 2025 he was arrested again, when he was found driving a Lamborghini at 216 km/h in Argyroupoli.
