Liolis: 'I was a target of war' – Three and a half hours of testimony in basketball scandal
For three and a half hours, the former president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK), Vangelis Liolis, gave testimony before an investigating magistrate, contesting the charge of continuous bribery within the framework of sports legislation, according to Newsit.gr.
The defendant declared himself innocent and maintained that he had been subjected to a 'war' aimed at causing him to lose the presidency of the Federation. In counterargument, he cited a series of financial and tax inspections to which he had been subjected, without anything reprehensible being found.
Specifically, Liolis stated that an inspection carried out in 2025 for the years 2019–2020 covered the entirety of his professional activities — among them Prometheus Patras, a food and beverage business and the EOK itself — without anything suspicious being discovered. As part of the same inspection, safe deposit boxes and bank accounts were also examined, both domestically and abroad.
Brief, by contrast, was the testimony of co-defendant Giorgos Mavraganis, which lasted only 40 minutes. Despite testimony from a series of witnesses against him, he too denied the charges. Mavraganis acknowledged that he had communicated with referees on behalf of Liolis, however he rejected the characterisation that he had sought match-fixing.
The case is now in the hands of the investigating magistrate and prosecutor, who are expected to decide on the next judicial steps.
