Serres: Arrest warrant issued for son of 68-year-old man — forensic pathologists identify criminal act

According to Ethnos, police arrested the 36-year-old son of a 68-year-old man on the afternoon of Tuesday, after the man had been found dead at his home in Serres on 1 August 2026. An arrest warrant had been issued earlier that same day, with authorities accusing him of murdering his father.

The case had initially been assessed as death from natural causes. The forensic examination overturned this assessment: the findings showed that the 68-year-old had sustained multiple blows to the abdominal area from a blunt instrument. A hammer or mallet has been cited as a possible object. The blows are said to have caused internal bleeding, which led to the man's death.

The case file with the investigating judge

Following the evaluation of the forensic findings, police gathered the case materials and handed them over to the investigating judge. The investigation turned to the possibility of manslaughter and the arrest warrant against the 36-year-old was issued that morning. Police went to his home and arrested him in the afternoon. The man is expected to be brought before the courts.

Contradictions in statements

The 36-year-old is said to have been the last person to see his father alive. From the initial stages of the investigation, authorities examined his conduct and the statements he had given. Information that was reported indicated that he had fallen into contradictions, both in his initial and in subsequent statements.

Until recently, however, not all the evidence deemed necessary to connect him directly to the crime scene had been found.

Father-son relationship and other findings

From the first phase of the investigation, police examined the relationship between father and son. As has become known, there had been friction and tensions between them, a factor which was assessed within the framework of the investigation. In parallel, the robbery scenario was also examined.

Witness statements came under the scrutiny of authorities, video footage from security cameras in the area, as well as findings from forensic laboratories. DNA analysis, fingerprints and biological material evaluated by the competent services are said to have played a significant role in the investigation.

The interview on "Light in the Tunnel"

The case had also occupied the television programme "Light in the Tunnel" with Angeliki Nikolouli. The victim's son had given an interview, during which questions emerged regarding his first visit to the house where the 68-year-old was found dead. When a contradiction was pointed out to him between his description and material from a security camera, he attributed it to memory gaps. He stated that he experiences health problems and that sometimes he does things which he subsequently does not remember.

The issuance of the arrest warrant marks a new phase in the case, which has evolved from what initially appeared to be a natural death into an investigation into manslaughter. The 36-year-old is accused of murdering his father and the case is now proceeding through the judicial system.
