Conviction of five police officers for Mangos torture at Volos Police Station

Five of six accused police officers were found guilty by the Mixed Jury Court of Karditsa for the torture of Vasilis Mangos on 14 June 2020 within Volos Police Station, according to To Vima.

The court decided to downgrade the charge concerning torture during the transport of the victim in a police patrol car to simple bodily harm and insult to personal dignity. No sentence was imposed on the accused for these acts, as these particular offences required a complaint to be filed — which had not been submitted.

The prosecutor's proposal

The prosecutor of the court had recommended the conviction of the accused of grievous bodily harm regarding the incidents within the police station. For the incidents that took place inside the patrol car, she also proposed conviction, with the exception of the accused officer who held the position of co-driver.

Furthermore, the prosecutor requested that all the police officers involved be found guilty of the offence of endangerment. In her reasoning, she noted that the police officers had an obligation to transport Vasilis Mangos to hospital or to provide him with immediate assistance.

Family reaction

Immediately after the announcement of the verdict, the father of the 26-year-old, Giannis Mangos, posted a message on social media. He stated that his son "is vindicated in history" following the decision that convicted five of the six police officers for torture, emphasising the support he received from society and the movement.
