Murder of Chatzidis in Serres: Son gives statement as suspect – video, quarrel and forensic findings
Avraám Chatzidis was called on Saturday to give a statement as a suspect in the murder of his father in Serres. New evidence from cameras and forensic examination is brought to light by Dikastiko.gr.
Serres: Son of 68-year-old Chatzidis gives statement as suspect — two visits, white bag and forensic questions
Avraám Chatzidis, son of 68-year-old Giorgos Chatzidis who was found dead in his home in Serres in August 2026, was called on Saturday morning (31/10) to give a statement before the authorities in his capacity as a suspect. According to Dikastiko.gr, new evidence that emerged during the investigation prompted the prosecuting authorities to conduct further inquiry into his involvement in the case.
Video footage: two visits and a vanishing bag
A central place in the new data is held by video footage from security cameras, which was presented by the television programme "Light in the Tunnel". According to the footage, on 30 July Avraám Chatzidis is shown arriving at his father's residence at 19:23 and departing approximately 17 minutes later. He returns again at 01:54 in the early hours of the following day, this time carrying a white bag. His stay does not exceed six minutes, whilst upon departure the bag is no longer visible in his hands.
He himself claims that he brought food to his father. For the first visit — which he had not initially reported to the authorities — he invoked memory gaps which, as he maintained, were due to health problems.
Neighbour describes intense quarrel on Thursday night
A new dimension to the case is provided by the testimony of a neighbour of the victim. The woman reported that in the preceding period voices from the 68-year-old's house were often heard, whilst on Thursday night she recorded a particularly intense quarrel, accompanied by loud bangs. She herself could not know with certainty what was taking place inside the residence.
Forensic findings raise questions about the position of the body
Additional questions are raised by the forensic examination, the results of which were also presented on the programme. On the corpse, livor mortis was found on the back, a finding which is said to raise the possibility of the body being moved after death. Additionally, a post-mortem imprint was recorded which points to a shoe sole. The 68-year-old's stomach was found to be empty of contents.
Avraám Chatzidis points to minors — solicitor speaks of written submission
Avraám Chatzidis maintains his claim that minors are responsible for the murder of his father, who had broken into the house a few days before his death, taking six euros. These minors had confessed to the break-in and were subsequently released.
The solicitor for Avraám Chatzidis, lawyer Ioannis Giantsios, clarified that his client will give an unsworn statement. In parallel, a written submission is to be filed setting out the defence's positions and claims. Giantsios also emphasised that the investigation is ongoing and that within its framework other persons have also been examined as suspects.
The case file is expected at the Prosecutor's Office
Following the completion of the preliminary investigation procedure, the case file is expected to be forwarded to the Prosecutor's Office, which will evaluate the evidence and decide on the next prosecutorial steps.
