One person died and nine were injured in a traffic accident caused on Thursday by a car with Bulgarian registration plates in Croatia, according to information provided by Croatian police to MTI, as reported by Index.

The accident occurred after 2 p.m. near Udbina, on the stretch between Podubing and Gornja Ploča junction on the A1 motorway. Police had been following the vehicle earlier as they suspected it was transporting illegal migrants of foreign nationality. The police pursued the car, but shortly after losing sight of it, the vehicle left the road.

The driver fled the scene of the accident, leaving the injured behind. The authorities later caught up with him and arrested him in a wooded area.

According to information from Croatian media, the emergency service sent a helicopter to the accident site to provide care for the injured and transport them to hospital. Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.
