Budapest police have taken a 30-year-old man into custody who stole human remains from his workplace hospital and cemeteries, which he then consumed. Officers arrested the suspect at his home in one of the capital's most established neighbourhoods last week – according to La Voz de Galicia.
Authorities were informed that an employee of a Budapest hospital was storing human body parts in his flat. During a house search, officers found a human face, facial skin, bones, the remains of a leg, a brain, a hand, skulls and a heart preserved in a jam jar. The latter is still being examined to determine whether it is of human or animal origin.
The man admitted to police that he feels a particular attraction to human body parts. He revealed that he had exhumed bodies from abandoned cemeteries, not only in Hungary but also in neighbouring Slovakia. The 30-year-old man also stated that he had prepared various dishes from the human remains he had obtained and consumed them.
The suspect is being investigated for the offence of desecration of a corpse. Police seized his vehicle, computer, laptops, tablets, mobile phones, as well as SIM and data cards. The man had openly discussed his collection of human remains with family members and friends.
