Hungarian police have arrested a 30-year-old man in Budapest on suspicion of collecting human body parts from abandoned cemeteries and his workplace, a hospital – according to CNN.
The National Investigation Bureau arrested the man on 17 June after receiving information that he was storing body parts at his workplace and home. The man worked as a hospital nurse.
During a search of his flat, investigators seized skulls, an entire lower leg and a hand, as well as a reconstruction made from human facial skin. Additional bones were found in a suitcase. A heart stored in a preserving jar was also discovered, with the police still investigating whether it is human or animal in origin.
During questioning, the man admitted to collecting the body parts. He claimed to be particularly drawn to human body parts and that he had prepared food from them and eaten them.
According to a police statement, the man "has a passionate interest in anatomy and pathology and enjoys performing animal autopsies". The suspicion is that he obtained the body parts through his hospital work and through excavations at abandoned Slovak and Hungarian cemeteries.
Investigators seized the man's computers, laptops, tablets, mobile phones, as well as SIM and data cards. The seized body parts are being examined by forensic experts. The police added that once the origins of all the body parts have been established, the scope of the criminal offences may expand further.
The man is being held on suspicion of unlawful use of human bodies.
