A man caused a serious accident while disqualified from driving, operating a vehicle without brakes, and under the influence of drugs on road 4805. Index reported in detail on the incident.
Disqualified, drug-impaired driver crashed into tree on road 4805
At kilometre 7 of road 4805, a car collided with a tree – Index reports based on footage of the scene released by police. A rescue helicopter arrived at the scene, and the driver was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Several civilians arrived at the scene first. The condition of the wreckage made it clear that the car had driven into the trees at tremendous speed. János Kerékgyártó, a senior sergeant at the scene, immediately provided first aid to the young man: he secured his head whilst a civilian held their telephone so they could follow the dispatcher's instructions. Meanwhile, firefighters cut open the car door, enabling them to extract the injured man and hand him over to paramedics, who stabilised his condition.
A database search revealed that the man was driving without a valid licence, as he was currently subject to a driving disqualification. A firefighter noticed that the brake had simply been dismantled from one of the wheels. The scene investigator additionally found a substance suspected to be drugs – white powder – in the vehicle; later examinations confirmed that the driver had been behind the wheel under the influence of the substance.
In a statement, police emphasised that the three factors – absence of a licence, non-functional brakes and drug use – each individually represent an extraordinary accident risk. The incident at once demonstrates the exemplary cooperation of those who arrived at the scene, and illustrates the serious consequences of a series of irresponsible decisions.
