A man who impersonated an off-duty uniformed police officer and assaulted people at a railway station received a two-year prison sentence, which the court suspended on probation. The decision is not final.
The incident began in May on a train, where three people were disturbing other passengers with their loud behaviour. A civil guard reported them to the emergency line. At Isaszeg, all three of them, along with an acquaintance waiting there, got off the train. Two civil guards escorted the group to the waiting room.
It was then that the defendant appeared in civilian clothes. He displayed a holder that resembled an official badge and said he was a police officer. He ordered the victims against the wall, forced them to the ground, took their belongings, then verbally abused and physically attacked them.
Real police officers arrived later and took the perpetrator into custody. The Budapest Regional Court found him guilty in four cases of violation of personal freedom.
Both the prosecution and the defence appealed: their positions are opposed, with one side seeking harsher punishment and the other seeking leniency.
