A special group comprising six police officers has begun operations in the Bács-Kiskun county seat, with its sole task being the detection and apprehension of drug traffickers – according to hiros.hu.
Gábor Gama Kovács, the commander of the local police department, pointed out in a report to city leadership that drug trafficking cannot be eliminated through policing measures alone. The emphasis must be placed on prevention, since if demand disappears, traders will lose their business foundation. During the captain's three and a half decades of service, he has seen only a handful of users who successfully overcame drug dependence.
The Kecskemét uniformed officers submitted a request last November to establish an independent division called Delta with the National Police Headquarters. However, the capital's leadership rejected the proposal. In spite of this, the local police department consolidated six employees who deal exclusively with drug-related matters.
The commander warned that larger quantities, so-called "kilogram deals", have begun to emerge in criminal circles. The Kecskemét police are submitting a further request to the National Police Headquarters for official recognition of the independent unit.
From the rest of the report, it emerged that the police department has vacant positions, although they have begun rehiring those who previously left. With material support from the city council, approximately six thousand hours of overtime payments became possible in the past year. The captain finally drew attention to scams spreading on the internet, in which fraudsters primarily prey on elderly victims.
