The National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) is investigating the previous finances of the Pesti Magyar Színház on suspicion of criminal activity. According to the suspicion, someone misused budgetary resources.
The cultural ministry made a report last spring, after an unexpected inspection revealed several problems. The report concerned the years when János Zalán led the theatre.
The investigation was later taken over by the NAV. The authority has questioned witnesses in recent times. The financial investigative body confirmed to one publication that the proceedings are ongoing and necessary steps are being taken, but it cannot disclose further details.
The ministerial investigation established that the theatre was run entirely by one person. The names of the economic and technical directors also appeared in the document.
Notably, the former director was appointed to lead another Budapest children's theatre earlier this year, despite artists protesting and several leaving the company.
