The National Tax and Customs Administration is conducting a criminal investigation into the financial management of the Budapest-based Magyar Színház, with suspicions that misuse of public funds may have occurred.

The National Tax and Customs Administration is conducting a criminal investigation into the financial management of the Budapest-based Magyar Színház – reported Index based on hvg.hu. The investigation was launched against unknown perpetrators on suspicion of budget fraud, violation of accounting regulations and breach of trust.
The Cultural Ministry filed a report in the matter in May 2024. The submission was addressed to Péter Polt, the prosecutor general at the time. The ministry ordered its own internal investigation into the theatre's operational problems and based on its findings decided to take legal action.
According to the suspicions, irregularities emerged in the institution's financial management. During the period covered by the report, János Zalán led the theatre. The government later, in early 2025, appointed him to head the Kolibri Színház.
The NAV is currently continuing investigative proceedings in the matter.
