A four-storey building undergoing demolition collapsed in Székesfehérvár on Monday. A man was rescued from under the rubble after a rescue operation lasting several hours, suffering serious, life-threatening injuries. Fejér County Police Headquarters launched a criminal investigation on suspicion of endangering others in the course of employment.
The injured man was searched for under the debris for several hours. The rescue was ultimately carried out by 141 specialists working in coordination. According to information provided by Péter Jackovics, head of the HUNOR Rescue Organisation, the man found himself in an extremely disadvantageous position: an I-beam was pressing down on him. A structural engineer from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics determined that the building had to be supported with machinery on three sides, and the beam had to be secured structurally in order for the rescue to be carried out safely.
The accident victim became trapped several metres deep and could only be reached by crawling through a gap just 30 centimetres wide. The rescue teams had to remove the debris piece by piece by hand from around the injured man. After being extracted, the man's circulation stopped; following brief resuscitation, he was taken to hospital intubated and ventilated. He suffered lower limb and internal injuries to the pelvic area.
The rescue operation involved Székesfehérvár professional firefighters, a unit of the HUNOR Rescue Organisation, the Metropolitan Disaster Management Directorate's dog service, the Pest County Search and Rescue Service – HUNGO, the Budapest Rescue Organisation, the Bakony Rescue Group, and the Bakony Cave Rescue Service. Specialists from HUNGO located the injured man using a camera, then, together with the cave rescue service and HUNOR, established a passage through the rubble through which they were able to bring out the victim.
Imre Szabó, spokesman for Fejér County Police Headquarters, stated to MTI that the police had launched an investigation for endangering others in the course of employment in connection with the incident.
