A sixteen-year-old suspect allegedly killed his 85-year-old great-grandmother with a knife in Budapest's eighth district, then converted the victim's earrings into cash at a pawn shop, according to the Blikk newspaper, as cited by 24.hu.
Police received a report regarding the property on Práter Street on the evening of 15 June. The eighty-five-year-old owner was found dead at the scene. The BRFK Homicide Unit opened an investigation on suspicion of a criminal act, specifically murder.
Investigators quickly identified the suspect: the victim's own great-grandson, a sixteen-year-old boy. The youth was questioned and taken into custody. He was joined by a fifteen-year-old girl, who is being investigated for accessory to murder; she was also taken into custody.
According to the newspaper's sources, the young man visited his relative two days before the tragedy was discovered, hoping to obtain money. When the retired woman gave him nothing, a struggle ensued. The suspect allegedly stabbed the victim multiple times in the neck with a sharp object, then took a mobile telephone and jewellery with him.
In his statement, the boy denied intentionally killing his relative. He claimed that an argument broke out, he pushed the elderly woman, who fell, and an item of jewellery fell from her ear during the fall. He and his girlfriend later took it to a pawn shop.
The Capital Prosecutor's Office initiated remand proceedings against the suspect. According to the indictment, the juvenile committed the offence with premeditation and for material gain against a person who, due to their age, was limited in their ability to defend themselves. In the case of the fifteen-year-old girl, home detention with electronic monitoring was sought, for being an accessory to murder.
