Prosecutor appeals in case of karate instructor accused of assaulting child at Szolnok adventure park
The Szolnok District Court sentenced a 56-year-old karate instructor from Nagykáta to suspended imprisonment for assaulting a 7-year-old boy. The prosecutor has appealed for a harsher sentence.
Prosecutor files appeal in karate instructor assault case
The prosecutor has filed an appeal against the first-instance judgment of the Szolnok District Court against a 56-year-old karate instructor from Nagykáta, according to the MTI news agency. According to Index, the case is connected to child abuse that occurred in the summer of 2024 at the Szolnok Adventure Park.
According to the indictment, the man was present as a children's camp leader when the group visited the adventure park. Following a conflict, the 7-year-old boy began to cry and did not stop despite the instructor's orders. The man then approached the child, lifted him, and carried him to a running track, where he forcefully threw him to the ground and kicked his legs – the boy fell and hit his head against the barrier at the edge of the track.
The child suffered no actual injury, however, experts determined that there was a risk of serious spinal cord injury that could have taken more than eight days to heal.
The prosecutor brought charges of attempted grievous bodily harm against a person incapable of self-defence and endangerment of a minor, and requested a custodial sentence, disqualification from public office, and a permanent ban from the occupation.
However, the first-instance court found the defendant guilty only of attempted grievous bodily harm – it did not establish the facts of endangerment of a minor. The man was sentenced to 1 year and 3 months imprisonment suspended for 3 years and a fine of 400,000 forints, and was also barred from teaching karate for 5 years.
The prosecutor appealed against the defendant: its aim is to establish a more serious charge and to impose a custodial sentence in accordance with the indictment.
