An intoxicated, disqualified driver went on a violent rampage in Budapest in June: in the Castle District, he drove into two motorcycle police officers and then reversed into a police car. An investigation was initiated against the man for assault on a public official and other offences, but video footage has now emerged recording the scene following his arrest.
The pursuit began on Andrássy Road when police noticed a vehicle illegally using a bus lane, which fled despite being ordered to stop. After a ten-minute chase, the driver collided with two motorcycle patrol officers near Csónak Street, then with a service vehicle. He was apprehended at the scene; the motorcycle officers were uninjured, and a uniformed officer in the police car suffered minor injuries.
However, footage recorded from the balcony of a nearby resident shows that after police pulled the man from his car, several uniformed officers kicked and beat the man whilst he lay handcuffed on the ground. A police spokesperson confirmed to RTL Híradó that a separate investigation was launched into the incident: investigating prosecutors are examining whether officers committed assault in the course of official proceedings.
The suspect was remanded in custody, and the police conduct towards him is being reviewed in a separate proceeding.
