On Saturday evening, Jonava residents received warnings on social media about a possible shooting in the city. Reports stated that it was best to stay away from one of the streets, as gunshots were heard.
Police arrived at an apartment on P. Vaičiūno Street, located in the Chemikų Street area, around 21:51. A woman called for help, reporting that a possibly intoxicated close acquaintance had broken into her home. The report was registered as a domestic violence case.
The attacker greeted the arriving officers with a weapon. Odeta Vaitkevičienė, a spokesperson for the Kaunas District Police, cited on the Delfi portal, confirmed that the man fired shots directly at law enforcement officials. The bullets missed the people, but one of them hit a car parked in the courtyard. Witnesses reported hearing several shots – about three or four.
Following the incident, the aggressor left the scene. Neighbours saw that he fled in a vehicle. According to preliminary information, he is a forty-four-year-old man. Large police forces have been mobilised for his apprehension, and Operation Plan "Apprehension" has been initiated.
Residents are urged not to approach the suspect and not to attempt to apprehend him themselves. Those with information about possible hiding places are invited to call 112.
