Man arrested in capital for robbery from elderly women
Last Tuesday, capital police detained a forty-five-year-old individual. He is suspected of robbing three elderly Vilnius women of their wallets containing cash, bank cards and other items.
The incidents occurred in three different districts – Justiniškės, Žirmūnai and Šeškinė. According to investigators, the suspect would select victims at ATMs installed in shopping centres. He would watch elderly women withdraw money and then follow them to their homes or less populated areas.
Upon catching up with his victim, the man would use force and prevent the possibility of resistance. In this way, he would steal the women's handbags along with their contents.
The criminal acts were spread across various districts of the capital. According to police, such tactics were intended to complicate the search and hinder the swift identification of the robber's identity.
Despite this, officers gathered sufficient evidence to identify and detain the suspect. It emerged that this person had previously served a sentence for similar offences.
The court decided to remand the man in custody – the most severe of the available precautionary measures.
The case is being investigated by officers from Vilnius city's first police commissariat. The investigation is supervised by a prosecutor from the Vilnius district prosecutor's office.
