Residents of Vilnius's Užupis district are sharing warnings on social media about a man walking in the city who attacks people. Reports indicate that he carries dangerous items, and his photographs and personal data are being circulated. Residents claim that a few days ago he attacked women in this district, and on Monday he was spotted walking in the city.
The Vilnius District Police Headquarters, as reported by LRT.lt, confirmed that it received a report about this person. According to officers, the man struck a woman in the face in a shop. A pre-trial investigation has been opened into this incident under the Criminal Code article for causing minor bodily harm. The law provides for this crime a restriction of liberty, arrest, or imprisonment of up to three years.
Ramūnas Matonis, head of the Police Department's Communications Division, commented on the situation to residents, assuring them that police are investigating the circumstances. According to him, various preventive measures may be imposed on suspects, and the strictest of these – detention – is applied only in exceptional cases when there are necessary grounds for it.
Police representatives refused to comment on the suspect's state of health, although residents have expressed concern about this. It emerged that this year police had already been contacted about this person for a breach of public order. Officers have not yet disclosed whether the man is currently in custody.
