State Police has completed its investigation into a VW Sharan deliberately set alight on 4 July this year in a multi-apartment building car park in Rēzekne, according to vp.gov.lv. The vehicle's owner suffered losses totalling €1,100.

During the preliminary investigation, officials identified two possible culprits. On 15 July, a man born in 1983 was detained, and on 17 July, a man born in 1980 was detained. The court applied the security measure of remand in custody to the latter, while the other suspect was subjected to security measures not involving deprivation of liberty.

Criminal proceedings were initiated under the second part of Article 185 of the Criminal Law — for the deliberate destruction or damage of another's property, if carried out by burning or in any other generally dangerous manner. This criminal offence is punishable by imprisonment for a period of up to ten years and probation supervision for a period of up to three years or without it.

The criminal case materials against both men were referred to the prosecution office on 28 September to commence criminal prosecution.

State Police emphasises that the damage or destruction of another's property is not an acceptable way to resolve mutual conflicts, as such conduct causes material losses and endangers the safety of people in the vicinity. At the same time, the police remind that no person is considered guilty until their guilt is proven in the manner prescribed by law.
