Execution at night in Plaisance: Le Lamentin in shock

Around midnight, residents of the "La Roseraie" housing estate in the Plaisance district of Le Lamentin were awakened by a series of gunshots. According to rci.fm, a 26-year-old man was found shortly afterwards by police in an alley on Mapou, his body riddled with bullets, with "a very large number of shell casings" scattered nearby. Firefighters could only confirm his death.

Several residents described their night. "I was watching television with my children. I heard gunfire, and the instant after we saw flashing lights. It was this morning that we found out the news," testified one resident. Another was "jolted awake" and first checked that her loved ones were safe and well before going back to sleep. Françoise, meanwhile, did not sleep a wink all night: "I heard the gunshots, I was very, very, very afraid. I told myself, maybe they are fireworks for Christmas. But explosions like that, I don't think they are Christmas things."

"A settling of scores" according to the mayor

David Zobda, mayor of Le Lamentin, questioned by rci.fm, speaks of "a genuine execution". "This is not a young man from Le Lamentin, this is a settling of scores. This reflects drug trafficking and relations between gangs. This is a young man from Fort-de-France who was captured there and brought to Le Lamentin for execution," he said.

An investigation has been entrusted to the Territorial Service of the Judicial Police.

26th homicide since January, 25 of them by firearm

Residents of the normally quiet neighbourhood are struggling to understand. "This is unprecedented, I have been here for 10 years and it is the first time I have seen anything like this. We are asking ourselves questions: are we safe? Even for our children, it is worrying," confided one neighbour.

This murder brings the total number of homicides recorded in Martinique since the beginning of the year to 26, of which 25 were committed by firearm. It also constitutes the fourth death of the weekend, following three fatal shootings that occurred between Trois-Îlets and Rivière-Salée.
