Operation with drones and simulated delivery rescues businessman in Ascope

The National Police of Peru (PNP) rescued without injuries Roberth Edinson Trujillo Leiva, a 40-year-old businessman, who had been held since 31 October in Ascope province, La Libertad region. According to infobae.com, the operation combined aerial tracking with drones and a negotiation that included a simulated ransom payment to trap the abductors.

The complaint was filed verbally by Cinthya Gemina González Lucano, the victim's wife, who reported that her husband had been kidnapped near a church in Ascope. From that point on, agents from the PNP's Criminal Investigation Department for Kidnappings and Extortion (Areincri) launched a follow-up and intelligence operation, according to the Andean Agency.

The use of drones proved decisive in locating the area where the gang was holding the victim. The officers identified the sector without alerting the kidnappers, whilst carrying out search and sweep operations in parallel. Trujillo Leiva was found just 600 metres from the point designated for the money delivery.

Fake payment and two detained in flagrante delicto

As part of the strategy, the agents agreed with the abductors to leave 5,000 soles in a sector of the Roma annex in Ascope. When Luis Fernando De la Cruz Cuzco, 18 years old and known by the alias "Chikio Luis", collected the bag with the money, he was detained in flagrante delicto. At the moment of the intervention, a mobile phone was seized from him, which forms part of the evidence in the case.

The capture of De la Cruz Cuzco led to a second detention. The chief of the La Libertad Police Region, General PNP Eric Waldir Ángeles Puente, reported that officers located and arrested Karin Requelme Boy, 19 years old and partner of the first detainee, also allegedly involved in the kidnapping.

Preliminary investigations indicate that both arrested individuals would be part of the gang called "Los Secuestradores de Roma", a criminal organisation operating in the Ascope area. The actions were brought to the attention of the Public Ministry to determine the corresponding criminal responsibilities.

"Extremely grateful", declared the rescued man

Following his release, Trujillo Leiva expressed his gratitude publicly. "I want to thank God and the entire police team that has done an excellent job. My family and I are extremely grateful", he declared, visibly emotional, according to the Andean Agency.

The Interior Ministry (Mininter) recalled that victims of extortion can file complaints in person at the nearest Depincri or at the Extortion Investigation Division (Divinext), located in the Rímac district. The telephone line 1818 is also available to report these crimes. Line 111 provides guidance on the steps to follow in cases of extortion, and complainants can request an identity reserve code to protect their personal data.
