Venezuelan with drug record detained after shooting of professor in Chilca
According to hytimes.pe, Evert Emiliano Buitriago Bengochea (28), a Venezuelan citizen with a criminal record for illicit drug trafficking, was arrested on Thursday 29 October as the main suspect in the assault on a professor in Chilca, Huancayo, in which the victim was shot whilst S/ 13,000 recently withdrawn from a money-lender was being snatched from her.
Agents from the Emergency Squad intercepted Buitriago at Giráldez Avenue with Guido Street, in Huancayo, after an alert circulated about a dark-skinned, tall man with a beard who had fled the crime scene. Upon spotting the patrol car, the suspect attempted to escape, but police officers overpowered him. In a personal search they found a bag with a presumed narcotic substance, for which he was also detained on suspicion of illicit drug trafficking. In the same operation Moisés Enrique Guerra Vargas (33) was also arrested.
The assault took place on 28 October 2026, at around 4:10 p.m. The victim, identified as Evelyn Penaloza Olivera, was attacked with gunfire whilst the robbers took the money from her.
Motorcycle tracking
Investigators from the Criminal Investigation Area of Huancayo (Areincri) reviewed surveillance camera footage and located the motorcycle allegedly used in the robbery, registered in the name of Johan Leonardo Rojas León (32), found at a residence on Gabriel García Márquez Avenue, in the human settlement of Justicia, Paz y Vida, in El Tambo. Rojas León stated that he had sold the vehicle to Gerson Jesús Manrique Suárez (27), who in turn claimed that on the day of the assault he lent it to Buitriago Bengochea.
With that information, agents arrived at a residence at the intersection of 13 de Noviembre Avenue with Santa Isabel Street, in El Tambo, where the Venezuelan is believed to have spent the night. Buitriago fled across the roofs of neighbouring houses upon seeing the police. At the premises they detained Maday Yemina Salvador Llantoy (19) and Jhossy Jhalkelin Tejeda Aguilar (26), accused of attempting to obstruct police entry to facilitate the suspect's escape; both were detained on suspicion of personal harbouring.
Criminal history since 2020
Buitriago's criminal record dates back to October 2020, when he was apprehended in Huancayo alongside Edixon José Cova Márquez (28) after being recognised by a victim who identified them carrying clothing and a watch that had been stolen from her days earlier. Both were investigated for alleged theft and receipt of stolen goods.
In 2022 he was investigated again for illicit drug trafficking in the form of promotion or facilitation, and was sent to Huamancaca Chico prison. He regained his freedom after the First Criminal Appeals Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice of Junín ruled on an appeal regarding the extension of his preventive detention.
The investigation into the assault on the professor also encompasses Rojas León, Manrique Suárez, Salvador Llantoy and Tejeda Aguilar, all of Venezuelan nationality. The police are working to determine each person's role in the robbery and in the suspect's escape.
Furthermore, Buitriago would be implicated in another robbery that occurred days earlier in Chilca, in which the perpetrators stole S/ 50,000, and in which, according to initial information, the same motorcycle is believed to have been used.
