Caraz court sets preventive detention hearing against Venezuelan for communicator's homicide
The Criminal Court of Preparatory Investigation in Caraz has scheduled for 20 November the preventive detention hearing against Venezuelan Adrián Solís Ruiz, identified by the prosecution as the organiser of the murder of Susy Aponte Polo, a communicator and former regional candidate known as "China Polo". According to infobae.com, the defendant is held in Venezuela, where he fled following the crime.
Solís Ruiz was detained in flagrante delicto in Guárico state and remains in custody at the Municipal Delegation of Calabozo, under the responsibility of the Body of Scientific, Criminal and Criminalistics Investigations (CICPC). According to the judicial ruling, the court ordered that notification be carried out by consular writ directed to the General Consulate of Peru in Venezuela. In parallel, and given the gravity of the offence, it ordered the notification certificate to be sent directly to the commissioner of the police station where the investigated person is detained, in order to expedite the service. Solís Ruiz must ratify or formally designate his defence lawyer within 48 hours of notification, under warning that a public defender will be assigned ex officio.
The crime of 19 September
Aponte Polo was shot on Saturday, 19 September 2026 whilst walking through Caraz market with supporters on Avenida Ramón Castilla. A bullet struck her in the head; five people accompanying her, including three minors, were wounded. The attack was captured in a live transmission by a local journalist, in which gunshots can be heard and the candidate's fall is observed.
The hitman, identified as Luis Iván Obispo Díaz, was captured minutes later with a 9-millimetre Glock pistol reported stolen from a police officer in 2023. During interrogations, Obispo Díaz stated that he was contacted through a Peruvian woman known as "La Gocha" and that Solís Ruiz offered him 15,000 soles to carry out the murder of Aponte Polo. "A good job is more than 10,000, 15,000 soles, that's why I did it," the hitman said.
Surveillance network and financing
According to the prosecution's investigation, Solís Ruiz allegedly directed the group that stayed in a Caraz hotel from 15 September to monitor and follow the candidate before the attack. The establishment's security cameras also recorded his partner, Alexandra Toro Montezuma, Obispo Díaz himself, and a fourth individual identified as "Morocho". Ronald José Toro Ardila, Toro Montezuma's half-brother, allegedly covered the costs of transportation, lodging, food and mobile phone chips for the group from Lima.
Fatal accident in Venezuela after flight
Following Obispo Díaz's immediate capture, Solís Ruiz and Toro Montezuma left Peru heading to Venezuela. On Thursday, 1 October, the bus in which they were travelling with their 4-year-old daughter collided with a road divider and overturned on the General José Antonio Páez highway near the hamlet Tierra Buena, in the municipality of Guanare, Portuguesa state. Toro Montezuma and the child died at the scene; Solís Ruiz survived with serious injuries.
In the passenger manifest, which listed 35 people on board, Solís Ruiz appeared under the name Adrián Solís, age 23, and Toro Montezuma as B'Angel Toro.
Luis Obispo Díaz is already in preventive detention, as is the alleged financier Ronald José Toro Ardila.
