Police officers from the Katowice division combating economic crime, in cooperation with customs officers from the Silesian Customs and Tax Office, have concluded a key investigation into illegal gambling operations. It is one of the most serious affairs of this type in the country's history.
An indictment has been filed with the court against 84 people. They are accused of establishing and operating within an organised criminal group. Proceedings have been supervised by the District Prosecutor's Office in Bielsko-Białe. According to estimates by officials, the offenders accumulated at least 158 million zloty from the illegal operation.
During the course of operations, officers from Sosnowiec, with support from anti-narcotics units in Katowice, detained a 36-year-old man. Ten kilograms of methamphetamine were found in his backpack. By court decision, the suspect was remanded into custody for three months.
A separate line of inquiry concerns illegal trade in excisable goods. Ruda Śląska police officers, together with customs officials, detained three suspects for placing cigarettes without Polish excise marks and illegal alcohol into circulation. A total of over 1,700 packets of cigarettes and alcohol worth more than 60,000 zloty were seized.
