A 49-year-old former police officer admitted to killing his 80-year-old father-in-law and attempting to murder his 76-year-old mother-in-law. The man was captured after a four-day search involving hundreds of officers.

On Friday after 4pm in Mierzawa in Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, a family tragedy occurred. A 49-year-old man who had previously served in the police force, after an argument with his wife, went to her parents' house armed with a knife. There he attacked 80-year-old Tadeusz B., inflicting fatal blows. His 76-year-old wife Regina B. was also attacked and sustained serious injuries. The woman was taken to hospital where surgery was performed. Doctors describe her condition as serious but stable.
The perpetrator fled the scene on a yellow and black electric scooter. A large-scale search was launched. Nearly 350 officers were mobilised, along with the military and fire service. Tracking dogs, aircraft, drones and quads were used to search through difficult, boggy and densely forested terrain.
On Monday at around noon, officers located the suspect in a small wood near his property. The man was exhausted from several days on the run in difficult conditions. He was not armed and offered no resistance during his apprehension. Several armed police officers led him out of the thicket in handcuffs. An ambulance then took him to a medical facility where he received care. He is currently in police custody.
During interrogations conducted by investigators, the 49-year-old admitted to the charges against him. On Monday it was reported that the injured woman's condition allowed her to be questioned by law enforcement. The gathered evidence enabled charges to be brought against the man.
After the suspect's arrest, the police command revealed details that had previously been kept secret. It turned out that the vehicle he used to flee the scene was found as early as Saturday, on the second day of the search. This information was withheld in order not to give the fugitive an advantage in understanding the course of the operation. Investigators also suspected that the man might attempt to return to the scene of the tragedy.
During the manhunt it was emphasised that the detainee had not undergone specialist police training, and his service focused mainly on preventative activities.
In the coming days, the prosecutor will continue actions aimed at clarifying all the circumstances of the crime.
