Officers of the National Tax Administration have thwarted a major tobacco smuggling operation. In Małaszewice, a transport containing 1.2 million packs of cigarettes destined for the black market was intercepted.

The operation conducted by customs and tax authorities targeted an organised criminal group involved in illegal trading of tobacco products. The contraband was hidden in containers being transported through Polish territory.

The value of the seized goods and details concerning those responsible have not yet been disclosed. Investigators are conducting further steps aimed at identifying all persons involved in the scheme.

Cigarette smuggling represents one of the main sources of income for organised criminal groups. Untaxed tobacco products deprive the state of significant revenue, and their sale supports the grey economy.
