Security services in Poland have detained a Belarusian citizen and a Polish citizen, who were alleged to have conducted espionage on behalf of Belarusian intelligence services targeting people from the Belarusian diaspora living in exile.

Security services in Poland have detained a 19-year-old Belarusian citizen and a 44-year-old Polish citizen, who were alleged to have conducted intelligence activities on behalf of Belarusian intelligence services. Their targets were Belarusians living in exile in Poland. The information was conveyed by the Reuters agency.
A court decided on a three-month detention order for the younger of the detained men – the 19-year-old Belarusian. The older man, the 44-year-old Pole, was placed under police supervision and issued a ban on leaving the country.
As informed on the X platform by the spokesperson of Polish security services, Jacek Dobrzyński, the men, who were paid by Belarusian intelligence services, participated in events organised in Warsaw by the Belarusian minority. During these meetings they recorded and photographed participants. The materials gathered were passed across the eastern border, where they were used by the services and propaganda of the regime of Aleksander Łukashenko, added Dobrzyński.
The detentions form part of a broader investigation. Within its scope, in November of last year, three Belarusians and two Ukrainians were already remanded in custody.
Warsaw has repeatedly accused Belarus and its ally, Russia, of conducting espionage and sabotage operations on Polish territory.
Poland hosts a significant number of Belarusian dissidents, who found refuge there especially after the suppression of the opposition during protests that erupted following the controversial presidential elections in 2020.
