Premier Donald Tusk has stated that the murder of Russian cartoonist Robert Kuchofka, known as Semion Skripiecki, in eastern Poland bears the hallmarks of a political assassination. The incident occurred on Monday in the city of Biała Podlaska.
The 44-year-old artist was shot three times by an attacker armed with a handgun. When Skripiecki fell to the ground, the perpetrator approached him and fired twice more at close range. Polish authorities are searching for the perpetrator, who remains at large.
Kuchofka gained prominence through provocative cartoons depicting Russian political figures, including Vladimir Putin, Joseph Stalin, Ramzan Kadyrov and Alexei Navalny. In 2021, the artist settled in Poland, citing fears of political persecution in Russia.
During his time in exile, he continued his satirical work and actively participated in events organised by the Russian opposition. On social media, he repeatedly criticised the Ukrainian government, which led to his home address being posted on Myrotvorets, a controversial Ukrainian website.
Polish intelligence services and police had previously offered protection to Skripiecki, but the artist declined for unknown reasons. Two Belarusian citizens were detained in connection with the case and were subsequently released by the court. The investigation to identify the perpetrator is ongoing.
Tusk emphasised that if the murder was commissioned by Russia, it would also constitute a very serious problem with international dimensions. The case could further escalate tensions between Poland and Russia, which have deteriorated following a drone incident in autumn 2025 attributed to Moscow.
