The Regional Prosecutor's Office Warsaw-Ursynów has registered a case concerning suspected improper practices at the mortuary of Warsaw Southern Hospital. The decision was made after reviewing media reports on the subject.
As informed by the spokesman of the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw, prosecutor Piotr Antoni Skiba, the press materials suggest that a person employed as a mortuary coordinator had allegedly engaged in irregularities. These were said to involve charging unjustified fees for the release of remains to the family and directing families to a specific funeral home in exchange for financial benefit. These actions may constitute an offence under Article 296a § 1 of the penal code, namely bribery of an official in a managerial position.
Furthermore, according to one of the press accounts, there was an alleged desecration of remains by urinating on them, which is classified as a prohibited act under Article 262 § 1 of the penal code.
At the current stage, however, the available evidence does not permit the initiation of a formal investigation. No complaint reporting a suspected criminal offence in this regard has been lodged to date. In the course of other proceedings conducted in the Warsaw district, no information indicating such conduct has been revealed.
The Regional Prosecutor's Office Warsaw-Ursynów is appealing to persons possessing knowledge of irregularities at the mortuary of Southern Hospital. Investigators are particularly requesting representatives of families of the deceased, hospital employees and representatives of funeral homes to make contact in order to establish a date for questioning.
