On Thursday, Poland's highest judicial authority will reconsider one of the most brutal crimes of recent years. The matter concerns the murder and skinning of a young woman, which took place in Kraków more than a quarter of a century ago.
The prosecution has filed a cassation appeal against the decision that finally acquitted Robert J. – the man accused of committing the crime. The law enforcement authorities do not agree with the earlier verdict.
The acquittal ruling was handed down at the end of last year. Judge Marek Długosz, the presiding judge of the panel, explained at the time that the decision did not mean he was convinced of the defendant's innocence. In the view of the lower court, guilt had not been proven to the extent that it could be accepted without doubt. For this reason, in accordance with the principles of criminal procedure, the verdict had to be favourable to the accused.
The defendant, who regained his freedom, has already initiated separate proceedings seeking substantial compensation.
Now it is in the hands of the Supreme Court to decide whether to uphold the current verdict or to overturn it and order the case to be reconsidered.
