On Thursday the Supreme Court is to hear the case of the brutal murder of a young woman, committed more than a quarter of a century ago. The prosecutor has lodged an appeal against a court ruling that finally acquitted Robert J. – the man accused of the crime.
The incident took place in Kraków. The victim was a student who was killed and then had skin removed from her body. The crime shocked public opinion and remains one of the most macabre cases in the history of Polish criminology.
Robert J. was initially convicted, but after years a higher court acquitted him with a final ruling. Justifying the decision at the end of October 2024, the presiding judge Marek Długosz explained that the acquittal does not mean the court is convinced of the accused's innocence. It was handed down because the court was not fully certain that guilt had been proven beyond doubt.
The prosecutor disagrees with this ruling and has filed a complaint to the Supreme Court. At the same time, the acquitted Robert J. has already filed a lawsuit seeking multi-million compensation.
