The Supreme Court deemed the prosecution's motion entirely unjustified, definitively closing the case of the murder of a young woman from nearly three decades ago.
In the second half of the nineteen-nineties, the remains of a 23-year-old theology student were recovered from a river. The investigation was conducted by the Kraków unit of the National Prosecutor's Office responsible for organised crime. The court of first instance in 2022 sentenced Robert Janczewski to life imprisonment. However, the Kraków appellate court overturned this verdict in 2024, finding that all unresolved doubts should benefit the defendant.
The Prosecutor General filed a cassation appeal against this decision, citing procedural defects. However, the panel hearing the case in Warsaw found the arguments to be groundless. Judge Barbara Skoczkowska, presenting the justification, noted that this case had remained at the centre of public attention and that of the victim's relatives for many years.
