After Robert J. was acquitted in a final court ruling, the prosecution filed a complaint to the highest judicial authority in the case of a student's murder more than 25 years ago.
Supreme Court takes on one of Kraków's most brutal criminal cases
A hearing will take place before the Supreme Court in Warsaw on Thursday, which will re-examine one of the most infamous crimes of recent decades in Małopolska. The murder occurred in the 1990s, and a young student was the victim.
The charge sheet pointed to Robert J. as the perpetrator. The man spent many years in detention and in a prison facility, awaiting resolution. At the end of October 2024, the first-instance court issued an acquittal verdict.
Judge Marek Długosz, who chaired the panel, precisely explained that the acquittal decision did not mean conviction of the defendant's innocence. The matter was that the evidence gathered did not allow for the exclusion of all doubt as to who actually committed the murder.
Prosecutors did not accept such a ruling and filed an appeal. In their view, the evidence material was sufficient for conviction.
It is worth recalling that the circumstances of the student's death were exceptionally cruel. After depriving her of life, the perpetrator removed the skin from her body. It was this shocking detail that caused the case to be permanently recorded in the annals of Polish criminology.
Robert J., after leaving detention, decided to demand compensation from the state. His claims amount to several million złoty.
Now everything depends on the decision of the Supreme Court judges. Their verdict may mean the end of proceedings or the return of the case to a lower court.
